(余談)　複数の外国人の友人から聞いた話にこういうのがある。日本語のできない外国人が東京の地下鉄で列車の行き先をたずねるのに列車を指差して、「Harajuku?」と言ったら、聞かれた日本人が「I'm fine, thank you.」といって、立ち去ってしまった。
外国人は英語を話すものだという先入観からHarajuku=How are you?にきこえて、I'm fine, thank you.しか学校で習っていない日本人の紋切り型の答え(例えば、大怪我をして血を流していてもI'm fine, thank you.と答えてしまうような）が彼らにはおかしくきこえるのだ。

2. 「うん、それは面白い。」
3. 「まあまあです。（ありがとう。）」

(解説)　How are you? と似てはいるが、この場合は現在完了を使っているのでこれまでの継続を表し、「いままでお元気に過ごされてきましたか。」という意味になる。「まあまあです。」は他にso-soというのもあるが、むしろ、否定的であまりよくないといったニュアンスがある。

(解説)　1.2.とも訳すと、「はい、そうです。」になるが、question tag（付加疑問文の最後のところ）don't we?さえ聞き取れば、それからYes, we do./ No, we don't.が答えになり、ここでは3.の「うん、そうだね。」が正解になる。

4. Sure! I'd be glad to.

   I'd be glad to.=I would be glad to lend you my camera on Sunday. （喜んでお貸ししますよ。）

1. 「ああ、もうひとついかがですか。」
2. 「それで、部屋は快適でしたか。」

(余談)　筆者の旅行でもサンフランシスコのホテルで、よく似たことがあった。全く使っていない電話代を48ドルも請求された。それもクレジットカードで支払ったので、1カ月くらい後に来る請求書をよくチェックしておかないと知らない間に引き落とされてしまうところだった。こんな場合、サインさえしていなければ、支払前にクレジット会社にその旨伝えれば、ほぼ問題なく解決できるが、皆さんも注意してください。
